This striking £40m new Academy building replaced two former secondary schools. Ranked 25th in the whole of the UK North Liverpool Academy caters for over 1,700 pupils.
Large rooflights were used to light some classroom areas but the light gain proved too great. So a low-cost retrofit solution was sought to control light and glare.
Pentel proposed the Astralux 6000 louvre blind system to cover 36 square metres of rooflight. In this system the slats of the blinds are non-retractable but they can be tilted to very accurately attenuate the light.
Although typically motorised at this site the blinds were manually operated via a gearbox on each blind and a detachable crank handle to prevent unauthorised use. Two blinds were fitted per rooflight and due to their lightweight construction no additional building work was required as the blinds could be fitted to exiting grounds.
